What is Woodworm?

Several insects, mainly beetles, use wood as a food source. Some of them can cause serious damage to building timbers. The beetles all have fairly similar life cycles, although there are variations in the length of each stage in cycles, the type of wood attacked, and the extent and type of damage caused. Wood boring insects commonly found in building timbers fall into one of three categories according to the treatment normally required.

Sound Wood
Insects are a primary cause of serious damage in sound wood, and these require an insecticidal treatment(e.g.Common Furniture Beetle). Some can cause structural damage(e.g.Deathwatch beetle and House Longhorn beetle).

Wet Wood
Some insects are only able to feed on damp wood rotted by fungi(e.g.Wood Boring Weevil) and these are prevented by the control of wood rot.

Superficial
Other insects attack green or partially dry timbers which may be incorporated into buildings but these have generally been killed by the drying process and normally treatment is not required. Insects that normally feed on other materials, only boring into wood to make short refuge tunnels, are included in this category. Removal of the food source will prevent further damage.

What are The Signs of Woodworm Infestation?

It can be difficult to identify if you have a wood worm infestation as the damage is often caused inside the timber. However, there are a few woodworm signs that you can look out for such as:

  • Small round holes in your woodwork, typically 1mm to 2mm in diameter.
  • Fine, powdery dust around these holes (known as frass).
  • Crumbly edges to boards and joists.
  • Tunnels within the timber.
  • Weak or damaged timbers or flooring.

Where is Woodworm Found?

Woodworms can be found in several types of wood surfaces including:

  • Floorboards.
  • Furniture.
  • Joists/beams.
  • Roof timbers.
  • Painted wooden surfaces.
  • Joinery and structural timbers
  • Decorative woodwork
  • And more.

What Happens If Woodworm is Not Treated?

If you spot woodworm in the UK it’s essential that you treat it immediately. If untreated, woodworm contributes to the weakening of timber, therefore compromising the structural stability of your home. If woodworm is found in timber joists, load-bearing wood, roofing, rafters and structural timber, it’s vital that you get it treated.

How Can I Prevent Woodworm?

There are several things you can do to prevent woodworm in your home. We recommend…

  • Keeping all wood in your home dry as wetter wood is more attractive to woodworm.
  • Keeping your home well-ventilated and heated.
  • Buying furniture made from good quality hardwood.
  • Sealing wood with varnish.
  • Checking for signs of woodworm when purchasing antique or second-hand furniture.
  • Removing infected wood from your home.
  • Replacing infected timbers.
  • Treating timber with a woodworm treatment.
  • Using flytraps to catch adult wood-boring beetles before they have a chance to mate.

How Much Does It Cost to Treat Woodworm?

The cost of wood worm treatment will vary depending on its severity, location and treatment required. We recommend getting in touch with us for a quote based on your requirements.

  • Rising Damp Treatment
Rising damp is the term used to describe the process of water being absorbed from the ground and through the walls of a building. Called capillary action, this process typically results in a visible ‘tide-mark’ which can be seen at around one metre up the wall. Walls surrounded by porous materials such as plaster, timber and wallpaper are likely to be impacted by rising damp. If you spot rising damp in your home or other property, it’s vital that you call professionals to take remedial action immediately. Contact us for more information.
  • Condensation
You may often see condensation on windows within your home. Condensation is caused by the build-up of moisture. In the home, this can occur for several reasons such as the high humidity of indoor air, low temperature of the walls/surfaces, and poor ventilation. If you notice condensation within your home, it’s vital that you find the source and act quickly.
